Alan specialises exclusively in personal injury and clinical negligence, and is instructed by Claimants and Defendants.

Before coming to the Bar he practiced as a Clinical Pharmacist. Alan is able to apply his legal and clinical background when dealing with both personal injury and clinical negligence cases. He has invaluable experience in conducting conferences with medical and other clinical experts. Alan is a safe pair of hands when co-ordinate a case with multiple clinical disciplines.

Alan regularly undertakes JSM’s in high value settlements. He has an amicable disposition, is approachable and client focused. Alan is consistently able to grasp complex details within a case and explain the issues in a meaningful way to reassure clients.

Areas of Expertise

Alan deals with all aspects of clinical negligence in general practice and hospital ranging across medical, surgical and psychiatric treatment. He has dealt with cases involving nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and other clinical professions. He regularly deals with issues concerning diagnosis, prescribing and dispensing of medicines and medical devices.

Alan’s practice ranges from failed sterilisation case to injury by novel or experimental therapy.

Before coming to the Bar, Alan worked as a Clinical Pharmacist in the Regional Drugs and Poisons information centre at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. As a Clinical Pharmacist he has acted as a pharmacokinetic expert witness in a number of trials involving psychoactive polypharmacy.

Alan is particular skilled at explaining complex issues to clients so that they trust his judgment and advice. He is able to “Speak the same language as the clinicians and translate into Standard English.” [Albeit, with an Irish accent.]

Alan acts in all areas of high value personal injury including: fatal accidents; catastrophic injuries; nervous shock; inquests; RTA (including fraudulent claims); MIB; Employers’ Liability, Occupiers’ Liability, product liability, highways, assaults and schools, residential homes and other areas of public liability.

Alan frequently appears in the Coroners Court representing families of the deceased as well as trade unions, institutions and insurers.

He has appeared in many inquests into fatalities within or following care in hospital or other public care facilities including prisons and psychiatric units. He has acted in inquests concerning the death of persons while in custody and or while under the care of local authorities. Where appropriate he would then go on to represent parties in any consequential civil claims.

He regularly appears in inquests where individuals with mental health problems have died following contact with health care facilities.

Alan has acted in inquests where prescribed medication altered the mental processes of the deceased. He is experienced in inquests where medication and illicit drugs interactions were suspected.

Alan has been specifically instructed in a number of high profile inquests where a delicate touch is required when dealing with very sensitive issues attracting media attention.

Alan has extensive experience in pleading, advising and attending trial in cases where fraud and fundamental dishonesty have been alleged.

He is part of the very strong team at ParklanePlowden that deals with cases involving low velocity impact collisions and those cases where there are allegations of staged accident, phantom passengers, exaggerated and fictitious injuries. He has been involved in numerous cases where there has been a finding of fundamental dishonesty.

When dealing with evidence in suspected fraud Alan excels at reviewing medical records to reveal evidence inconsistent with pleadings and witness statements.

Alan is regularly instructed in disease cases such as: NIHL; HAVS; Asbestos; Asthma; Dermatitis or COSHH.
